Amateur and professional photographers of all ages are invited to capture the essence of Whale Watching, during the Southern Right Whale’s annual migration to the waters of the Fleurieu Peninsula in the Prints of Whales Photographic Competition. |
PEOPLE'S CHOICE! |
WINNERS of the PRINTS OF WHALES 2009!The judging panel was astounded by both the number of ‘hero’ shots taken of whales along the Fleurieu. With more than 70 images submitted by both local and international photographers, deciding on the outright winners was a mammoth task.
Carol Brown was award the major prize of $1000.00 cash which was proudly sponsored by the South Australian Whale Centre.
Robert Dunn was awarded the major prize of $1000.00 cash which was proudly sponsored by Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism.
The talented prize winners were not the only ones to benefit from the competition. Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism and the South Australian Whale Centre will, as part of the terms of entry, be able to utilise the images to promote whale watching within the region. The South Australian Museum’s Mammal Department is also a ‘winner’. They will be provided with more than 2,000 images of whales (made up from additional photographs collected by the entrants throughout the season). The Museum will eventually use the images to identify and name each individual whale, recording their visitation and calving rate each season. Natalie Perkins, Coordinator of the South Australian Whale Centre, closed the proceedings by thanking the event sponsors, and announcing “The City of Victor Harbor has already approved the inclusion of the competition on the 2010 calendar of events.” She went on to say that planning for the 2010 competition had already commenced. “We have already been discussing adding more category options with our major sponsor Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism and as such anticipate the 2010 competition will attract more attention from both participants and nature lovers alike.” |
