VolunteeringVolunteers play an important role in the daily functions of the Centre. Volunteers are encouraged to contribute their skills and experience through one or more of the roles available. Training in the areas of customer service, point of sale and communication are available to assist Volunteers with fulfilling their daily duties. Usually Volunteer recruitment is done annually, however some positions do become available throughout the year.

In this front of house role, Volunteers are required to address customer enquires, process sales and maintain the shop and display areas.The role will alternate between the front counter and the display areas of the centre.

In this role, Volunteers are required to lead groups through the centre, providing verbal narration of the exhibits and displays. Additionally Volunteers may also participate in school based education sessions delivering fun, educational programs to groups either within Centre or on location.

In these two roles, Volunteers may be required to assist with clerical duties such as recording whale sightings, collating and maintaining information on the exhibits and the collections, answering telephones and entering data. Although this is a clerical role Volunteers will still have contact with the public at the front counter.

Whale Spotter Volunteers are recruited by the Centre each year in April, to assist with both spotting whales and confirming sightings reported to the Centre by the general public. Whale Spotter Volunteers are key members and are responsible for reporting and recording information about Southern Right whales throughout their annual migration (May-Oct).

Join the Friends of the SA Whale Centre IncThis community group aims to raise money to support marine research and conservation throughout S.A., including projects currently being undertaken by the SA Museum and the SA Whale Centre. Where possible, funding is also made available to specific research studies or conservation projects within the region.
Members of the group can be involved as little or as much as they like. They can simply be a voting member who helps to steer the committe by voting on matters, or they can be actively involved by joining a committee, fund raising, assisting with conservation projects and more.
To become a member you simply need to complete an application form and send it to Friends of the South Australian Whale Centre Inc., along with your membership payment. If you would like to discuss your involvement, please contact our Chairman Bryon Haines on 0448 883 138.
